Here is a demo of a Preview function for Mediawiki. It uses the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ToggleDisplay ToggleDisplay] extension and some layout.

I haven't template-ized the layout yet. I took a stab at it but the syntax eluded me. 

I have seen another layout option where a preview of the target page is viewed in a small scrollable window. [http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic_II:_The_Sith_Lords#Voice_cast Here is an example]. That idea might be incorporated into this hack.
